Science says that human life begins in the womb. That’s WHERE it begins. But WHEN is the exact moment it begins? Do we know the answer to that question?
Unequivocally….YES. We know.
Science has answered that question for us too. According to a 1996 Princeton study,
“development of the embryo begins at stage one, when a sperm fertilizes an oocyte and together they form a zygote.” A zygote is the scientific term for a fertilized egg.
In plain English, at the moment of conception, when the egg is fertilized, a new human life is formed, complete with its own genetically unique DNA. Unique DNA means it is actually a new human person, not a genetic copycat of its parent.

Dr. Jerome Lejeune, a French pediatrician and geneticist, is perhaps best known for discovering the extra chromosome responsible for Down’s Syndrome. However, his research also proved that the full human genetic code is present in the human embryo from the moment of sperm-egg fusion. That means that this “zygote” actually is a unique, distinct, and individual person – with it’s own fingerprint! This genetic code is not just any genetic code. It is an unrepeatable, human genetic code – completely different from the mother and father.
Dr. Lejeune wrote, “To accept the fact that, after fertilization has taken place, a new human has come into being, is no longer a matter of taste or of opinion. The human nature of the human being from conception to old age is not a metaphysical contention. It is plain, experimental evidence.”
Essentially, when life begins is not up for debate anymore. A unique human person exists immediately at the moment of conception.
The Miracle of Life
At the moment that human sperm meets an egg, literal sparks fly! A bright flash of light is produced by the billions of zinc atoms that are released at the exact moment of conception. This indicates that the egg has been successfully fertilized and can now develop into a healthy embryo.
As the zinc releases, it binds to small molecules that emit fluorescence, which is picked up by microscopic cameras as shown in the following video.

Without question, the beginning of human life truly is a miracle!
A Human Life Deserves Human Rights
Now that we know that this new life is a human person, it must therefore be eligible for human rights – and that includes the right to life.
Abortion stops a beating heart and ends a human life. If you are considering abortion, you are not alone, and you definitely have other options. Visit this website for more resources and information, including a clinic that can get you the care you need.
